Buyer beware! There are many marketing scams that prey on uneducated buyers. Most websites selling protection dogs are really re-sellers. They buy dogs raised and trained to be sport dogs in Europe. When those dogs wash out of competition training or develop health issues, their owners sell them to brokers — who sell to more brokers — and U.S. companies buy from their "contact" in Europe and pass the markup on to you at every step.
New scam alert: We have been contacted by over a dozen people who purchased from other companies a dog that was much older than they were told. These are retired show dogs from Europe — many five to seven years old — but buyers were told they were two or three years old. Fake medical records and microchip numbers were included in the sale. Buyer beware.
The individual who raised the sport or show dog in Europe sold that dog to the first broker for a few thousand dollars. By the time it reaches you, the same dog is priced up tens of thousands — based entirely on what the seller believes the market will bear. These dogs were never raised to be personal protection dogs. Some are capable of both sport and personal work, but 98% are Schutzhund dogs that have never seen home life, have been kennel-raised, and know nothing of civil agitation.
Age is another issue. Many of these dogs are much older than you are being told, well into their prime, and their age should absolutely factor into the cost.
