40+ years of hands-on experience producing the world's finest home-raised and trained protection dogs. Trained thousands of dogs across 115 purebred breeds, serving families and executives worldwide.
David Harris is the Founder and Head Trainer of Protection Dog Sales, bringing over four decades of full-time, hands-on experience in canine development, breeding, behavior, and training.
His formal education includes studies at Oklahoma State University, where he focused on animal sciences, husbandry, animal psychology, and veterinary medicine. Already deeply immersed in the dog training profession, David continued to expand his expertise by attending West Virginia Canine College, where he broadened his foundation in canine behavior and developed extensive experience in dog sports.
Following his graduation, David was selected to serve as a Master Instructor at the college, a position he held for two years before founding Canine Services Unlimited in 1988, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become Protection Dog Sales.
Throughout his career, David has remained committed to continuous growth and innovation in the field. He believes that great trainers are defined not only by their technical skill, but by their ability to listen to clients and adapt to the evolving needs of both dog and owner.
David has served as Head Trainer for multiple training organizations and continues to lead by example through his apprenticeship program, where he mentors and develops the next generation of professional dog trainers.
After graduation he held the position of Master Instructor at the college for two years before founding Canine Services Unlimited in 1988.
David Harris has never stopped pushing the standard forward.
In addition to his foundational education, he has continued his professional development through advanced studies and seminars, including coursework at Cornell University, the Tom Rose School, and ongoing participation in top industry seminars across the country. His commitment to lifelong learning reflects his belief that true mastery is never static.
Over the course of his career, David has trained thousands of dogs spanning more than 115 recognized purebred breeds, as well as countless mixed-breed dogs. His experience is both deep and diverse, with a background that includes companion animals, AKC competition, and Schutzhund, giving him a comprehensive understanding of canine performance across multiple disciplines.
At the core of David’s work is a genuine passion for dogs and an unwavering commitment to strengthening the bond between each dog and its family. He believes that training is not just about obedience or performance; it is about creating a relationship built on clarity, trust, and reliability.
David has provided one-on-one expertise to a wide range of clients, including families, law enforcement agencies, military personnel, and serious dog sport enthusiasts throughout the United States. His ability to assess both the dog and the human side of the equation sets him apart in an industry often focused on only one or the other.
As the father of four children and thirteen grandchildren actively involved in dogs and dog sports, David brings a unique, real-world perspective to family dog selection and training. He understands firsthand what it takes to integrate a high-level dog into a dynamic household, and is uniquely qualified to help clients select the right dog for their lifestyle, goals, and expectations.
David feels that the key to any good trainer is listening to the owner and keeping abreast of new information to better enhance the dog/owner relationship.
Many years later, David still believes in keeping up with and developing new skills and knowledge in the dog field. He continues his own apprenticeship program to further educate the next generation of Master Trainers in personal and family protection dog development.
